John Carpenter’s Halloween is one of the finest and most influential films in the history of film. Not just paracinema or genre film, but film period. It is arguably Carpenter’s finest work (though I might put The Thing just a hair above it), and despite both sequels, remakes and derivatives putting forth their best efforts to defang Carpenter’s 1979 original, it remains starkly terrifying. In my mind, it is not quite The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but it’s close. So close that the brains behind the Atari 2600 adaptation of that movie made one of this movie.
